Tacoma Family Photography | Learning to Embrace Living. {A Personal Post} I remember when I used to say, “excuse the mess” and people would look at me puzzled… almost as if they are saying “what mess?” without actually saying it. We used to have white couches, a white washed entertainment center, and glass coffee and end tables. We had white statues on glass tables along with a huge decorative bible, always opened to Psalms, perfectly displayed in front of a perfectly and ridiculously clean window. Everything was always neat and tidy and our home always smelled fresh. Well, those days are long gone…

I know my husband still gets a little tense when everything is a mess these days. And, I am not talking about mail on the counter or a glass left on the coffee table from last night. (we used to think that was a big deal!) Now, dishes pile up faster than we can wash them, there is never a bare piece of floor, and I won’t even get started on our laundry situation (I did SIX loads on Tuesday…SIX. LOADS. And I didn’t make a dent!)!

This morning while we were frantically looking for my daughters competition leotard and team sweats (ha,ha,ha,ha) for a gymnastics competition later this afternoon, I heard so much laughing and clapping and just a general happiness coming from my living room. One can hardly sit still when Yo Gabba Gabba is on… But this was the sound of happiness. True. Real. Utter. Happiness. When I peeked into the living room, I saw life. And the happiness of life. I didn’t see a mess. I saw a carefree living space, filled to the brim with laughter, enjoyment, and sure, perhaps a little bit of chaos.

I was reminded that that is exactly what we are supposed to do. We are supposed to LIVE in our living room. We are supposed to celebrate LIFE in our living room. Who cares if there are more toys than you can count or if pink and purple are the only colors you can see in a 20×20 room. I choose to see life. I choose to see living. I choose to embrace my living room… and live in it. (and perhaps lay in the middle of it and make a toy angel! who says you need snow to make angels?)
